Firehouse #2 Historical Sites and other Cool Places
Built in 1885, Firehouse No. 2 is the oldest surviving municipal
building in Stevens Point. When the station was built, the Stevens Point Fire Department was a volunteer organization that employed a horse drawn steam engine dubbed 'General Ellis'.
The firehouse became Stevens Point's first YMCA from 1967 to 1974. In 2006, the facility was converted to a museum after it was purchased by the Portage County Historical Society.
This building currently houses the 1933 American LaFrance Truck, purchased at the Chicago World's Fair, an 1890 hose wagon, and various other fire fighting artifacts. It also houses
the first printing press in Wisconsin, which printed the first newspaper in Wisconsin.
